Is there a way to disable the bookmark headings so that they do not open links or windows? I'd rather have this off or an option to turn it off, accidental clicks are a mess when a livemark has 20+ threads.

Otherwise, brilliant extension after building my own bookmark homepages for the last seven years your work is greatly appreciated.

Adding UTF-8 charset (as long as bookmarks.html contain it) to BookmarksHome source would be great for users who are using non-ASCII characters in bookmarks. Please consider it. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I've upgraded firefox to version 1.5 and Bookmarkshome to version 1.4.3 and now my style sheet does not work properly. I have a background image that used to work with a previous version of firefox that doesn't load on my bookmark page...
Have you ever tried this ?
It used to work fine...
btw, this is one of the best extension (with mouse gestures) for mozilla, thanx a lot !

here is a small part of my sheet:

body {
font-family: meta-normal;
font-size: 12px;
background-image: url(bgroun.jpg);
}
the image is in the "content" folder of the extension.

Brilliant, brilliant extension. Working perfectly in Firefox 1.5, and easy to use. Thank you!

One more request to add to the millions (you can tell people like it because they want more): Would it be possible to separate different folders, e.g. Live Bookmarks, so that they can be viewed on their own (I have so many, it slows the page down). I realise this would also make it into a feed reader, but what the hell?

Also, if the folder could collapse like a tree view, then those of us with too many Bookmarks could scroll down quicker...

Anyway, the extension's great as it is - am just looking for total and final perfection! Cheers.

Really great extension!!!
What i want to know is:
How can i display the search engines as a list with radiobuttons instead of the drop-down-box?
or at least can i open the dropdown box when i hover over it?

righ now i mark the dropdownbox in yellow with the following code:
select:hover {
background-color: #ffff33;
}
but better would it to open it also a list of all search-engines with radiobuttons in front would be more better...

Does someone have an idea?

When you want to add a bookmark in the bookmark toolbar, you can opt to have it loaded in the side bar. However, the bookmarks set for the sidebar and added to the bookmarkshome, loads their contents on the main frame.

Hello,

I really love this bookmarkshome. But since I've upgraded it for Firefox 1.5 it doesn't seem possible to open links like: file://xxx/xxx/x.html

Since I have some pages located on my disk instead of the internet it lacks some functionality for me. It used to work great.

Can you enlighten me concerning this issue ?

Hi

As I have said here earlier, bookmarks home is great. I see that since version 1.2.4, it used to support more search engines like a9, dogpile etc. But in the latest version (1.4.3), the drop-down menu for search does not have a9 in it.

Could you tell me how to go about adding a9 as the search engine, if possible? Thanks!

There's a new version (1.5). Responses to the above questions:

[148] Tooltips now adapt themselves to the window size

[150] Fixed. search form gets focus

[151] Header links can be disabled

[152] Fixed. bmh now properly encoded in UTF-8

[153] Engines (and links) can now be opened in a new window or tab (Open externally option). Where they open is determined by preference

[154] You should put the image in the
chrome/bookmarkshome/content folder

[158] You can now make 5 different bmh pages. So you could make some for livemarks and others for bookmarks

[159] It's just one click to open the drop down list, so seems fine with me.

[160] The folders can now be sorted alphabetically

[162] Loading in the sidebar seems to me more something you'd want in the context (right click) menu (e.g. searching a selected word in a dictionary), but maybe in the next version.

[163] I'll try to document changes/freatures/bugs a bit better

[164] A font-size of -1000px? That's a typo I think. I changed into 12px.

[164] You can now open file urls again (not with the context menu though, for security reasons)

[166] Search engines at mycroft.mozdev.org

[167] What if you open the bookmarks manager?

Hi,
Since installing bookmarkshome 1.5, there is a letter "D" right at the start of the bookmarkshome page. Sometimes it changes to a different letter. Any ideas how I can get rid of this?

Just to add it starts off as an "L" whilst the page is rendering. Once done it first shows as an "F", but if I refresh a few times (or open a new tab) it changes to "D".

garcia,
In the textarea of the style tab you'll find

#statusDiv {
/* display: none; */
}

Remove the /* and the */ to hide the status chars (L(oading), read from D(isk), loaded with E(rrors), F(inished) loading succesfully). If the char is 'D' and your page contains livemarks, you may want to refresh.

Something different. I found out that the "Save page as" feature doesn't work on windows (and on linux doesn't work when you choose the name of an existing file. In the next version this will be fixed.

Thanks Jeroen - problem solved!

BTW having multiple pages - i.e. about:bmh1 etc. is a great idea, but surely all pages should have hyperlinks to eachother at the top of the page(in the same way "readme", "home", "options" etc. are linked at the bottom of the page).

Of course you can do this manually by creating a bookmarks folder and having about:bookmarkshome, about:bmh1, ... , about:bmh4 in them, but surely it would be much better (more elegant etc.) to have it there by default and outside your personal links?

Just a future enhancement request in your todo list. BTW I love this extension and coz of me atleast 50 more firefox users have installed this extension.

garcia,
You can ignore the exception (ff expects an http url for pages that have a favicon, not an about url like bmh)
Simon,
I think you mean by drag/drop? That will be hard. You can however change the order with the bookmarks manager: higher in the bookmarks menu, higher on the page.
Daddypopp,
Hope you did remove the bmhPrefs.rdf in your profile folder, not the one in
/extensions/{1d..}/chrome/bookmarkshome/content
If so, you'll have to remove the one in your profile folder and reinstall bmh. Otherwise, can you set options; do any of your folders display on the page?
Manoj,
Glad you promoted bmh :-). Rearranging can be done with the bookmarks manager. With moving I think you mean drag/drop?

Hi Jeroen,

I think I have a different problem, at least I couldn't find anything about it here :-/

First time I installed bmh, it worked perfectly - until my ff 1.0.7 cruched (I think during a bmh operation). Since then I keep getting the following error popups:

"BookmarksHome failure. Open new window to try again."
(when starting ff)

"BookmarksHome failure. Close and reopen Options window to try again."
(when trying to acces the options)

When I finally reach the bmh options, all the fields are empty!

So I removed bmh and installed it again (2 times:-). Didn't change anything :-(
So I updated to ff 1.5.0.1 today, but that didn't do anything too, with the current bmh. But the error messages are still the same :-(

Thank you for your help!

Eddie (using Win2k)

I previously used "Foxportic" ( to reach my bookmarks. Unfortuneatly, this tool doesn't work well with FFox 1.5 and I discovered Bookmarkshome which gives similar results.
I'm really satisfied but have only one feature request :
would it be possible to automate the creation of links between the differents bookmarks pages (about:bookmarkshome, about:bmh1...) to facilitate navigation. Thks

Eddie,
Probably (one of) the 2 files that bmh stores in your profile folder ( mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile ) got corrupted. Best to quit ff, remove them both (styles.rdf and bmhPrefs.rdf) and start ff again.
Stephane,
I'll think about a good way to do this. You can of course create a folder with all bmh pages and include it in every page

Recently I noticed a little single digit letter in the upper left hand corner of the bookmarksHome page. The Letter Capitol D shows up. Sometimes an L, sometimes an F. What's that about?

Great add-on!

But it is possible to change the title of the tab? I would like to personnalize it because i've created several pages with bookmarkshome that are opened at the same time, and the title for the tabs is always BookmarksHome.

I noticed that too. There is an extra tag in the "bookmarksHome.html" in the profiles folder. I just edited the html file in a text editor and took the entire DIV tag out. Unfortunately, I can't remember where the name of the DIV tag but I remember there was an element in the DIV tag of a property of 3px. Search for 3px in the html file and you'll find it.

Besides that, everything has been working perfectly for me except that it can't remember the passwords for my ftp site. Its not that big of a deal since I don't need to upload the bookmarks very often but I can see it being a nuisance for someone who does.

This is one of my favourite extensions.

Hi,

It would be very helpful visually, to be able to sort bookmark folders from "top to bottom" instead of "left to right". I can provide a screenshot if you need further explanation of what I mean.

What do you think?

Thanks!

I have noticed that with last updates of Bookmarkshome I am not longer able to open Bookmarkshome bookmarks in a new window with middle-click (middle-click works with links in other pages, but not in Bookmarkshome). After some testing I discovered that the problem disappears if I disable GmailManager!! I cannot understand it, both extensions are not related and do not share resources as far as I know. Has anyone noticed something similar?

Hello,
I have done a very compact style (to read all your bookmarks on one sheet ! )

h1 {
/* IE hack */
font-size: 1em;

#statusDiv {
/* display: none; */

BookmarksHome 1.5.2 working great on Fx 1.5.0.2
Just one question, if I may: why does BMH page refresh automatically once in a while? What are the reasons, is it not possible to have the page refreshed only when I decide it? Thanks.

How about letting us download from FTP?

I like that extension, but I think I have 2 improvements to suggest:

No. 1: Make it like a web directory like the style of dmoz. Per user setting, to make for each folder an own page. It has a smaller size, and would feel much better to handle

No.2: I use FireFox only as checking browser, is there a way to build an external application, based on 'bookmarks home' to convert - Uhmmm ... say Opera bookmarks - to build such an Personalized Browser Homepage?

Hi

bookmarks home is a a really cool extensions, especially the functionality to upload to a ftp site. Would it be possible to upload it automatically on startup oder shutdown of firefox? this would be a huge improvement for me.

thanks

Hello!

I've noticed BMH causes Firefox to spend a hefty amount of time (~10 secs) every startup just because I've got alot of bookmarks. I think you should optimize the system to quickly grab the right folders and then display them. I haven't looked at the code, but considering the time it takes for BMH to initialize, seems like it's going through each folder manually.
I don't know exactly how many boomarks I have, but I'd say a thousand (imported from del.icio.us).

Here's a Matrix Style sheet

Note :
To have the bookmarksSheet background image :
1. Download it at :
2. Rename it to matrix1280.jpg
3. Put it in chrome>bookmarkshome>content folder

I second that, the only problem I have with Bookmarkshome is that the search bar doesn't work after install, unless you rebuild it manually. Other than that it works perfectly.

Thanks,

I've modified the compatible version section of the rdf so it 1.5.2 will install on Firefox 2.0. Head over to to download it. No warranties. The search engine functionality doesn't seem to work as it did though.

Jeroen, Dimiter, Josh -- Thanks for the original work. Like the other correspondents, I've felt lost using Firefox 2.0 without it. It's one of the most useful extensions I know of.

Nick -- Thank YOU for the update. I'm a happy Firefoxer again!

Temp solution:

h t t p : / / bookmarkshome . ifrance . com

Click on the firefox image for the xpi

From google translator:

begin translation:
BookmarksHome automatically creates a pretty banner page with your mark-pages but does not function any more with firefox 2.0.0.* then while waiting for the official update for firefox 2…
And you include/understand anything with this history xpi…

I propose it to you in remote loading!
:end translation

Great ...

to Install bookmarkshome on firefox 2

Just use the link above [246] - store to your harddisk
then in firefox 2.0 file - open file - bookmarkshome2.xpi
and install it.
Download the zipfile with search-engines "décompresser l'archive des moteurs" and uncompress it to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins and enjoy !

I really like this peace of software
